On Sunday night, Nov. 1, the Lombard Fire Department responded to a fire at a single-family home on the 900 block of E. St. Charles Road used as an animal shelter for stray and homeless cats. Crews extinguished the fire by about 8:40 p.m. and rescued 36 of 38 cats, which appeared in good condition; the other two are believed to have escaped.
