On Tuesday evenings, adults walk into the Helen Plum Library on Main Street and head for the combined meeting rooms. College of DuPage runs free English Language Acquisition classes there from 6 to 8:25 p.m., according to the college’s locations page.

The library lists the sessions as free English language learning classes offered by the college. The goal, according to both the library calendar and the college site, is to develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for work, education, and everyday communication.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays. The fall session has already begun, the college’s location page notes. On-site placement testing at the library has passed, but the college requires a placement test before anyone can register. Walk-in testing for the CASAS test is available at several College of DuPage centers, including the main campus in Glen Ellyn. No appointment is needed for those walk-in sessions.

The college asks that children not attend testing or classes. Anyone interested can call the Adult Education Office at (630) 942-3697 or email ela@cod.edu for details on remaining options.

College of DuPage lists the library among several community sites across DuPage County. It also lists a second Lombard location, Glenn Westlake Middle School at 1514 Main St., where classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:55 p.m.

Near the Adult Services reference desk, the library keeps an ESL/ELL collection of books and electronic resources for adult English language learners and their instructors, according to the library’s ELL and languages page.

For neighbors who need language practice after work, the Tuesday and Thursday classes put free instruction inside a building many already visit for books or programs. The library’s calendar lists sessions continuing into mid-December.
