The Lilac Post

Living in Lombard

This is our short guide to the everyday business of living in the village, from trash day to library cards. Each section links to the office that runs the service, and that office has the final word whenever a rule or a date changes.

The Lilac Post is an independent paper. We are not affiliated with the Village of Lombard or with any of the districts, libraries, or parishes listed here.

Garbage, recycling and leaf pickup

Waste Management collects trash and recycling once a week under a contract with the village, and each household has a 64-gallon trash cart and a 64-gallon recycling cart. Put your carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on your collection day, but not more than 12 hours before pickup, and bring them in within 12 hours afterward. The village’s route map shows which day your street is collected.

The village’s free fall leaf collection runs from Nov. 2 through Dec. 11, 2026. Set out leaves in biodegradable paper yard waste bags on your regular collection day, and you won’t need yard waste stickers for them. Leaves in cans aren’t taken under the free program, and brush still follows the regular yard waste rules.

Overnight parking

Parking on village streets isn’t allowed between 2 and 5 a.m., under village ordinance 10-13-9. When you need an exception, residents and visitors can request overnight street parking for up to four nights a month through the village’s online request system. Requests aren’t granted when snowfall is more than an inch, and the village page explains who to contact about longer stays, such as a long-term guest or a home construction project.

Vehicle stickers

Lombard doesn’t require an annual village vehicle sticker, and it hasn’t since May 1, 2013. If you have just moved in, the village does ask new residents to update their vehicle registration address with the Illinois Secretary of State.

Water bills

The village bills water and sewer service monthly through its Finance Department. You can pay online through the village’s WaterSmart portal, set up automatic payments, pay by phone, or leave a payment in the drop box outside Village Hall, and the village says none of these options carries a fee. The WaterSmart portal also shows your water use, can send leak alerts, and can email your bill to you.

Library cards

A Helen Plum Library card is available to anyone who lives within the Helen Plum Library District. You can apply online, and if the library approves you through its online check, it emails you a card number so you can start using the library right away. If it can’t approve you online, it will ask you to bring in a valid ID with your current address. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian to register, and families in unincorporated Lombard can buy a non-resident card, which the library’s page explains.

Park district programs

The Lombard Park District takes program registrations online, by mail, or in person at Sunset Knoll Recreation Center, 820 S. Finley Road. To sign up online for the first time, an adult in your household has to create a household account, which needs residency verification and can take up to 48 hours to be approved, so it’s worth setting one up before registration opens. The district mails its quarterly Activity Guide to every household in Lombard and posts the current guide online.

School districts

Lombard is served by more than one school district, so your street address decides where your children go to school. The village points residents to Lombard Elementary District 44, Villa Park/Lombard District 45, Glenbard Township High School District 87, whose Glenbard East High School is on South Main Street, and DuPage High School District 88. Community Consolidated School District 89 also serves students from Lombard.

Each district has a boundary map or an address search. Districts 44 and 45 note that their maps give a general idea and ask families to confirm the result with the school or the district office.

Parish Mass times

Sacred Heart, St. Pius X, and Christ the King each post their current Mass schedule on the front page of the parish website. Schedules can change from week to week, so check the parish’s own page for the latest times before you go. The Parish Post covers news and events from Lombard’s Catholic parishes.
