Letter from the editor: Fall does the talking

By The Editor · Weekly column · Thursday, October 15, 2026

This is a letter to the editor. It is the writer's opinion, not The Lilac Post's and not a news report.

There's a week or two every October when Lombard looks its best and nobody plans it. The maples turn all at once, the Halloween decorations go up on block after block, and you can hear leaf blowers from three yards away in every direction.

I like this stretch because it's the village at its most honest. Nobody's performing. People are just out in their yards, waving at neighbors they haven't talked to since spring, doing the unglamorous work of getting ready for winter.

The village is doing the same thing on a bigger scale. Leaf collection starts November 2nd and runs through December 11th — free, curbside, no stickers needed. Main Street's resurfacing heads to bidding next month. None of this is exciting. All of it is why the place works.

That's what this paper is for, by the way: the stories that matter here, big and small. What's on this weekend. What the board actually decided. When to put your leaves out.

Thanks for reading. I'll be here every week.
