Burj Plaza on the board agenda, free leaf collection next month, and downtown Spooktacular

The Village Board met Thursday with a consent agenda that included a major change for the Burj Plaza planned development and a permit for next Friday’s Witches Night Out. Free leaf collection starts Monday, Nov. 2, and runs through Dec. 11; residents can put out unlimited paper bags of leaves with no stickers. Main Street still has lane reductions through about Oct. 20 for Helen Plum Library flood-recovery work, and today the chamber’s Spooktacular runs noon to 5 on St. Charles Road.

This week’s story

Burj Plaza change, Witches Night Out permit top Thursday’s board agenda

The Village Board met Oct. 15 with a full consent agenda; approved minutes with vote results were still pending Friday morning.

The Village Board of Trustees met Thursday evening at Village Hall with a consent agenda touching one of the Roosevelt Road corridor’s newest developments, next week’s Witches Night Out fundraiser, and the final accounting on a sidewalk project. As of Friday morning, the village had not posted approved minutes, so how the board voted was not yet public.

The development item was the second reading of an ordinance granting a major change to the Burj Plaza planned development at 501–593 W. Roosevelt Road and 1210 S. Finley Road, amending three earlier ordinances. The Plan Commission recommended approval with conditions on Sept. 21, and the board passed the ordinance on first reading Oct. 1, according to the published agenda.

Also on the consent agenda: an ordinance allowing beer sales and consumption at 23 W. Maple St. for Witches Night Out, the Lombard Historical Society’s fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 23. The women-only, 21-and-over evening runs 7 to 10 p.m. at the Victorian Cottage and Carriage House; $60 tickets include food, two drink tickets, a henna tattoo and a tarot reading, according to the organizers, with proceeds benefiting the Lombard Juniors Philanthropic Fund and the Historical Society’s Carriage House expansion fund.

Letter from the editor: Porch light on

By The Editor · Weekly column · Friday, October 16, 2026

There's a week in every year when Lombard runs on porch lights. This is it.

The village keeps the rules simple, the way good rules are. Trick-or-treating is recommended between 3 and 7 on the 31st. Porch light on means come up. Porch light off means keep walking. Nobody needs a reminder card.
